How far away is your local Christian bookstore?
Since over 80% of Canadians live in cities, and since most cities have a number of well-stocked Christian bookstores, there is no shortage of Christian books in Canada. Even if your community doesn’t have a Christian bookstore, the “big box” stores carry a large selection of Christian books, and on-line stores will ship books to your doorstep within days. High quality literature for private study, preparation for preaching or devotional enrichment is easily available and reasonably priced.
Now consider the case in the Majority World (or Two-Thirds world). In most of the world, Christian books are very hard to find. There are very few bookstores like the ones that we often take for granted. “Big box” bookstores simply don’t exist and there is no chance of on-line ordering. Moreover, Christian books are very expensive in these counties—often impossible for pastors or theological students to afford at all. Nearly all pastors in the Majority World are not paid by their churches, let alone given a spending allowance for books they need. Books printed in the West are costly especially in light of the exchange rates involved and shipping costs from publishers based in places like Britain and North America.
Langham Literature is a ministry of Langham Partnership Canada. Our literature program is dedicated to addressing the urgent need for high-quality, evangelical literature to be made available to pastors, theological students, and theological libraries in the Majority World. We have developed a remarkably cost-effective and highly efficient purchasing and distribution system that enables top-notch evangelical books to go exactly where they are most needed.
Our longing is to see every church in the Majority World being served by conscientious pastors who sincerely believe, diligently study, faithfully expound, and relevantly apply the Word of God. This is where the literature program fits in. As John Stott has said: “Pastors can’t preach effectively if they don’t study and they can’t study if they don’t have books.”
Your Contribution to the Langham Partnership Canada makes an impact in the Literature program
Last year, we joined with our international partners to supply more than 150,000 evangelical study books to 65,000 pastors, students, and faculty at hundreds of seminaries and Bible colleges in more than 70 countries throughout the Majority World. Every year, the Langham Partnership Canada donates 10% of our donation income to the literature program. Beyond this amount, in 2004 we are undertaking a new initiative to send at least an additional $10,000 for two special projects.
